East LA Revue Band
East L.A Revue Band
The East LA Revue Band was formed in 2001 by Steven Chavez, band manager and Art Hernandez, band leader. The bands’ musicians were drawn from various big-band groups of the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. The band members were Art Hernandez, lead guitar/male vocalist; Anthony Carroll, bass guitar; Rene Flores, drums; Dan Cressey, keyboard; Ray Ybarra, conga/percussion; Albert Barron, saxophone; Robert Chakeres, trumpet; and Maria Conchita Sandoval, female vocalists. Teri Speed would later join the band as the second female vocalist. George Gutierrez would add a second saxophone to the brass line-up.
The band specialized in the Rhythm and Blues/Eastside Sound that sprouted up in every 1960s dance and backyard party. The band remained “true to the eastside sound” and performed many of the locals’ favorite oldies. The East LA Revue band also shared the stage and performed with members of The Premiers, members of MALO and The Jaguars, The Eastside Connection, The In-Crowd and with Mickey Lespron, Bertha Oropeza, Mark Guerrero, and Bobby Zarate.
With the help of local DJs and radio stations, like the Radio Aztlan crew at KUCR 88.3 FM and Frankie Firme at KCLA FM in Hollywood, the East LA Revue Band performed at many events. We recorded several performances. Hector Gonzalez, Emmy Award recipient and the owner of Rampart Records, recorded and mixed down one of those live performances. We were blessed and are happy to share some of the recording with you now..
The band enjoyed a fun and successful four-year run, performing for the Japanese American National Museum in Downtown LA; the Los Angeles County Supervisors and the San Dimas Family Festival; the San Bernardino National Orange Show; the Riverside Orange Blossom Festival; KUCR Radio Aztlan Music Festival; a Welcome Home family picnic at March Air Force Base; the Comedy Store in Hollywood; The Hop in Lakewood and in Hacienda Heights; Thee Mr. Duran Show; BB King’s Lucille on the Universal City Walk; and at the Latin Music Festivals in San Bernardino..
We thank our families and friends for the love and support that we received during our time rehearsing and performing on stage. We love you and will never forget you. This page is dedicated to the memory of Anthony Carroll, Albert Barron, and Johnny Perez, who have since passed on. Rest in Peace. Amen.
