East L.A Revue Band
The East L.A. Revue Band was formed in 2001 by Steven Chavez, band manager, and Art Hernandez, band leader. The musicians were drawn from several respected San Gabriel Valley big-band groups in Southern California, creating a powerhouse lineup rooted in experience and passion.
Original band members included Art Hernandez (lead guitar and male vocals), Anthony Carroll (bass guitar), Rene Flores (drums), Dan Cressey (keyboards), Ray Ybarra (conga and percussion), Albert Barron (saxophone), Robert Chakeres (trumpet), and Maria Conchita Sandoval (female vocals). Teri Speed later joined as a second female vocalist, while George Gutierrez added a second saxophone to strengthen the brass section.
The East L.A. Revue Band specialized in Rhythm & Blues and the Eastside Sound, the music that defined countless 1960s dances and backyard parties throughout East Los Angeles. Remaining true to the Eastside Sound, the band performed many local favorite oldies and shared the stage with members of The Premiers, Malo, The Jaguars, The Eastside Connection, The In-Crowd, and artists including Mickey Lespron, Bertha Oropeza, Mark Guerrero, and Bobby Zarate.
With support from local DJs and radio stations—such as Radio Aztlán at KUCR 88.3 FM and Frankie Firme at KCLA FM in Hollywood—the East L.A. Revue Band performed at numerous events and festivals. Several performances were recorded, including a live session recorded and mixed by Hector Gonzalez, an Emmy Award recipient and owner of Rampart Records. We are honored to share portions of those recordings with you.
During its successful four-year run, the band performed at notable venues and events including the Japanese American National Museum in Downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Supervisors events, the San Dimas Family Festival, the San Bernardino National Orange Show, the Riverside Orange Blossom Festival, the KUCR Radio Aztlán Music Festival, March Air Force Base, The Comedy Store in Hollywood, BB King’s Lucille at Universal CityWalk, The Hop in Lakewood and Hacienda Heights, Thee Mr. Duran Show, and Latin Music Festivals in San Bernardino.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our families and friends for their love and support throughout our rehearsals and performances. This page is dedicated to the memory of Anthony Carroll, Albert Barron, and Johnny Perez, who have since passed on. Rest in peace. You will always be remembered.
