Subject: Vietnam Generation Tribute
Evening Brother Pastor
Thank you for re-introducing me to the internet radio program. Understand that I'm not much of a radio fan, so you must forgive me for not being a regular listener.
Your program dedicated to the veterans past and present is much appreciated and no doubt you've had your moments/experiences with family, friends and others that have experienced the long and the short of ... the results of war.
As for yours truly Charley, yes, I to was a Vietnam Vet as well, I fought for God and Country, was involved in situations/operations/missions that would curl your nose hair ... and give you night mares that you couldn't ever forget. ....yet, it had to be done and we did what we were trained to do. All of us did it well and after awhile it was a natural thing to take someones life. Our government taught us to be merciless and if they hadn't done so, more of us would have returned in body bags. One will never forget - those who lived it will seldom ever sit with you and tell you stories of what really went on in the jungles, behind walls, under the ground and even until you take your last breath, those who were there (not the wanna be's) will ever talk about it.
I was never a hero Charley, I was an operative, and a good one. My Dad, Rosario Lerma, he was a hero and was decorated as such. Nominated for the medal of honor didn't faze him...cause for him, it wasn't about medals, it was about serving his God first, then serving his newly acquired country. He didn't become a citizen until towards the end of WWII. But the most outstanding thing was his testimony (in action) that 50yrs later, the surviving men of his unit could still remember him being a man of God ... a testimony that has gone way over the top of being nominated for the medal of honor amen?
The only saving grace for some of Vietnam vets was that we had family, friends, strangers, churches praying for us without us not ever knowing who they were. Prayer warriors that kept believing that God was in control and that HE would direct all of our paths.
My own grandmother, mother, dad prayed me through it Charlie. I came home like many others and were greeted with rude comments, spitting on our uniform and even denied employment with some employers. I spent months having night mares of actions I was involved in while in Vietnam, so I left home and relocated in San Diego and worked out all the spider webs since I didn't want to put them on my family. The only one who really understood my leaving was my dad ... he knew because he had already lived it thru WWII.
My balance (even in todays career) has been keeping everything with priority in mind...that being, God First, Family Second and everything else falls down the line. Without that, I could very easily lose my balance and fall in the pits that many vets have fallen into ie: depression, flash backs, disabilities, lost marriage, drug addiction, alcholism, prison and the ultimate: DEATH....
Remember Pastor Charley, words are cheap ... and everyone will always say that they know how you feel, but the reality of it is that they have no clue. Prayer can make the difference, preach that Charlie, not the drama of war, prayer is the only thing that could help all lost vets come to the feet of Jesus .... Stay blessed by brother. WORD UP !
ENJOY THE TRIBUTE below.....

Thank you Sounds of Destiny for your love toward our Veteran especially our Vietnam Vets. I know that Pastor has always had a special love toward our men & women who have and are serving our country. I have been a witness to Pastor Charley paying for many soliders meals at resturants and just leaves. He also does it for our police men and firemen when he sees them at a resturant. Pastor thank you for showing us how to be greatful for our men & women who have served our country and our cities.

Brother Frankie,
This show is outstanding. How cool is it that the rolas we charish could be shared and bring smiles and joy to others. Good work Bro. I was thinking that we take day by day and don't realize that we are creating memories until we look back.
Date: Sat, 5 Nov 2011 05:37:07 -0500
What a walk back-I know it's be a long time but I was up on line and listening to the oldies and message - The music brings back many good and sometimes bad memories both important I like the message of Pastor Charley Gallegos on Wife's he is (right right along side 2012 will be 30 years for me and wife and what a blessing) what a tribute to the strength home to loads of history and culture! This time of year you would be chopping lots of wood or you would be cold. Then the Making tortillas on the wood stove with a big pot of pinto beansChorizo and papas yes indeed or posole soup on the cold winter day! There are so many different cultures that comprise American culture as a whole and we can are united in our diversity as we were then never forget what each has to offer-that is what makes America so great and the wisdom passed on from our elders we only need to return to that Listen & Learn, understand the why! Sorry got off track a bit!
Have a great week and keep the memories and music coming makes my dad Say hi to Pastor Charley and destiny his word is powerful to the spirit faith - like all made possbile through music and radio...#1

Senor Chico Manqueros,
Un placer amigo of the airwaves. Such a quality program you produce for us. I have been checking you out for a couple of years now. I used to play in the Dr. Loco band and most of the vatos check out your programa. If you get a chansa can you play something from our Con Safos CD ? I know you have played Linda Cholita and Homegirl de la Mission before, it would be firme to hear you play it again. I have never heard anyone but you play it on the air before. That recording was made such a long time ago. I remember your show with Sancho on KPCC in Los Angeles por que I have a lot of familia that live in the area and you would play cuts from the cassette copy all the time. Te lo agradecemos ese.

We are huge fans of the Gozando with Chico show. It is nice to listen to and hear some of the background on the tunes. I play piano and have played in several bands throughout the years. Actually started in High School with my compadre. Played all the backyard events and parties and really enjoyed it. Thank you for selecting the music you do for your show. It shows a dedication and appreciation for the recorded history of this music and it shows respect to the musicians performing it.

How long have you guys been doing this onda ? I have been listening since 2008 and I check out the vinyl classics tambien. How about putting more latino/chicano artists because that vinyl is hard to find nowadays.
Where are the Suave Grooves studios located? Do you also broadcast from Rampart records ? Must have nice equipment and sound because it sure sounds good every time I listen.

Thank you Pastor Charlie for your nice dedication to La High Tigers. The music took me back to the summer of 65, your sister Irma and a bunch of us girls borrowed a family member's car without their permission & went cruising to Ascarate Park ask your sis for the details. We had a blast it was worth the trouble we got into, good memories

Mr.Manqueros,
It was brought to my attention the other day the a Jerry Butler tune I coveered , "Givin' up on love" was being played on your show. I believe it was by your influence that it is being shared to my Gente.
Thank you brother,...a San Fer valley boy like me doesn't get the chance to share his stuff with others. I have other Latino recordings I'd like you to hear if you are interested.
Muchas Gracias Bro',...Matias (Matt) Dearo

Mr & Mrs. Chico this is Mr. Alvarado from San Leandro California. I came across your show about 4 months ago by mistake and later found out that many of my musician friends and non musician friends were already hip to your fine show. All I can say is thank you so much for being there and doing what you do. I don’t know how you can improve on an already great show, so I will say keep it up and please continue delivering all those sweet sounds for our ears.

Comments Chico thank you for all your good music. Your exposing some real musical treasures. Music tells the history of where we have been and where we are. There are so many artists you play that I would like to hear more of.

Ever since I began listening to music, creating fond memories went hand in hand with these chill moments cruising or just sitting outside. I'm 25 and have so many great memories all in a modern context with lyrics and rhythms from over 50 years ago. I can't wait to pass these songs to my kids.
Saludos y gracias for the heartfelt rolas.

Comments Your internet podcasts have really lightened up my day here. Sapo\'s tunes growing up are exactly what I remember on KHJ and right into the FM early days. All we had was the radio and this does my soul good.
